A Perfect start to a perfect day. Fog was forecast for first light so my soul was full of joy as I peered out of my camper van & saw the distant lights of Watchet in the far distance, crisp & clear in the still night sky...
Ready for the off & full of anticipation, I've wanted to do this trip for sometime, seems almost magical the way it captivates me. May be it's the excitement of not knowing if we'll get there or not, we chose a steep angle to cut across the tide to Steep Holm so there was no guarantee's with this trip...
Having just paddled a very rough section off the West side of Sully Island (no chance of getting the camera out), I paused to relish the last of the sun we'll probably see today as it heads towards the clouds...
Stuart passing Lavernock Spit buoy having left the rough water of Sully Island far behind...
On the approach to Steep holm It became Obvious we were in for a rough ride. Rough water close to the island (possibly an overfall?) was refracting from the cliff & causing the waves to spike making for very tricky paddling. Put it this way, my knee's went to jelly with the rush of it (FAB)...
A bit of fun...
A brief rest & we were on our way again & trying to hit Flat Holm before the tide turned as this would give us a better angle for paddling back to Sully Island. Had a bit of fun in the tide that was ripping around the Island when we got to Flat Holm...
Found an eddy to go check out this cave, we've both done it before but who can resist a cave?
Stuart paddles against the rip to get to our rest spot by the jetty...
Stuart playing in the rip after a rest on the Island. We played for some time here but mostly it was too tricky to get the camera out, will have to get some sort of camera support so I can start getting pic's in the bumpy stuff...
Back at sully Island & time for a coffee while we dwell on what was an utterly perfect day...
