4 Star Assessment, day 2...

I did it (phew).

It was a hard day on the water today. The conditions were outside of remit most of the time & would of suited a 5 star assessment.

Thanks to Chris, Richard & Dirk for being crazy enough to volunteer as our guinea pigs & Peter, Clive & Gavin who were also being assessed.

And a big thanks to Jeff & Simon from Sea Kayak Cornwall.

4 Star Assessment, Day 1...

Just finished day one of my 4 star assessment with Sea Kayak Cornwall.

Simon took us for the first day of the assessment & we paddled out of Mullion on the Lizard in good 4 star conditions,

Doing the assessment was Pete, Clive & Gavin & myself.

We started off by heading into some choppy water with a decent swell off Mullion Island to practice rolls, self rescues & x- rescues.

I managed to capsize whilst performing an x-rescue (whoops) but quickly rolled up & got Pete's boat empty & him back in it. The clamber on decks didn't go to well either in the rough water, something to work on.

We then moved onto Polurrion Cove for some surfing practice & Lunch & them back towards Mullion for some scenario based rescues & contact tows.

A good dat but I'm totally knackered!

Looking forward to tomorrow :)

Mad Cows & Cornishmen...

Just a short trip, but a bloody good one!

Today I'll be paddling with Mike.

And Sam, who'll probably kill me when she see's the title (LOL). Sorry Sam, gotta have a catchy title ;D

We headed out from Poldhu Cove & shortly after headed into Mullion for a pee :)

The swell was quite decent & the conditions quite choppy but we hugged the shore anyway & did some rockhopping on the way to Kynance cove.

Really good fun this.

After Kynance we headed back to Poldhu for some surfing & to meet up with Steve who was to join the action. My camera battery had died which is a shame as there was some good action. The biggest waves coming in at around 5 foot.
We all caught some good waves & I think we all took a beating too. I rolled loadsa times but the final wave pounded me good so I decided to call it a day.

The Dragon & Lizard Alliance...

This trip was the main reason that I came to Cornwall early for my 4 star assessment. It's high on my list of things to do this year.

I had a walk to Lizard point on Thursday, I've visited there many times before but I wanted to check out the conditions that I'd be likely to encounter. I wish I hadn't, it was only blowing about F4 but the race just offshore had 15-20 foot waves breaking over the reefs! I've never seen anything like that before so I was more than a little apprehensive about the paddle today.

Camp At Poldhu Cove...

Days of lazygititus left me a little shaky at the start of the paddle but I was soon into my stride, each paddle stroke slowly removing my lack of confidence & replacing it with optimism.
I was making a good 4.5 Knots from camp to Kynance Cove & I was eager to reach Lizard Point.

Kynance Cove...

Arriving at the tip of the Lizard, not to mention the most Southerly point in England, I was anxious to see what sort of playground I'd have. As it turned out it was nice & calm, arriving an hour before slack water had worked a treat :)
