Sea Kayaking Excursions in Sardinia...

Isola di Spargi is one of my favourite paddles in the Maddalena Archipelago and it's even better in winter when the tourist boats have gone! It makes for a very special sea kayak excursion here in Sardinia but it's a long and committing trip so we only take clients with experience of kayaking around the island.

I start the trip at the lovely beach in Palau. I'm the only person there! :)

I do however have to wait for the ferry to leave first.

I follow the coast initially,

Before heading offshore, into the serenity of the open sea.

A playground for adventure! I can see Spargi on the left, Maddalena on the right and Barrettinelli & Corcelli in the distance. Also in the area are Caprera, Budelli, Santa Maria, Razzoli and San Stefano as well as Corsica being just a short 2-3 hour paddle away! So many options for the adventurous soul.

I stop for a short rest after the crossing at Spiaggia di Cala Corsare. 

Getting back underway reveals a coastline of natural sculptures, rock gaps and a turquoise sea. It's like paddling in a holiday brochure!

I eye up Spargiotto longingly as I've not paddled there before. If you look to the left of the island you can see Bonifacio (Corsica) quite clearly. For another day :)

A closer view of the stunning rock formations on Spargiotto. I couldn't resist going there! When George Mallory said "Because it's there" he made on of the most profound quotes in Human history, that defines us as a specie, following no logic other than our own curiosity.

I stopped at the lovely Spiaggia Cala Granara & I've not been the only animal there.

These are the footprints of a chinghiali (Wild Boar).

And these prints I suspect were a Donnola (Least Weasel).

My own footprints however, led back to the sea and were lost to Poseidon's realm as I headed back to the mainland after an exceptional day!

Sea Kayaking Excursions in Sardinia...

Some journeys in Life are very special and this paddle around the stunning Island of Isola di Tavolara is one such journey! The island dominates the surrounding landscape for miles in all directions. Physically it is 3 miles long, ¾ of a mile wide and 564 metres high. It was once one of the smallest kingdoms in the World and you can still visit the Kings of Tavolara in the cemetery on the Island.

The paddle out from the mainland is always exciting as the view opens up in front of you.

It doesn't take long to reach the island but we take a break and go for a walk as the majority of the island is Military and off limits to the public. We won't be able to land again until we finish circumnavigating the island, which takes about 3 hours.

This is the cemetery where some of the islands Kings now rest.

Back in the kayaks and we start by tackling the northern end of the island first.

We soon reach the northeastern point and an amazing view!

This is Poseidon's arch, tidy da!

Theres a small cave to see before reaching the corner to the southern side of the island.

Then boom! This incredible view greets you. The photo really doesn't do it justice! The furthest point of the island in front of you is 3 miles (5KM) away and the height is 564 mteres high! In places the cliffs reach straight down to the sea floor 14 metres below, no transition, just a vertical plunge! The scale and the beauty really does blow you away.

After what always seems a long time due to the tired arms and empty bellies we reach the western point of the island where we can once again stop for a rest :)

It's a good spot for a cheesy tourist photo too!

Isola di Molara e Molarotto...

I had an amazing solo paddle yesterday with extraordinarily good weather, paddling around the island of Molara and out to the tiny island of Molarotto. I love Sardinia! :)
