Winter Wanderings (part four) Isola di Spargi...

So what does a kayak guide do when he's not working? Well in this short series of videos I'll show you and take you along on some of my favourite kayak paddling destinations here in the Sardinian winter. In this movie I'll be paddling around the beautiful Island of Isola di Spargi, part of the Maddalena Archipelago. This amazing place is a wonderful is like a playground for sea kayakers with so many islands, rocks, beaches and rocky headlands to explore. And if the beautiful islands aren't enough the the views of Corsica, just across the Straights of Bonifacio will hold your gaze and have you dreaming of a crossing! In this movie I'll be paddling around the beautiful Island of Isola di Molara. This amazing place is a wonderful place to paddle a kayak and the views of Isola di Tavolara as well as the mainland are spectacular!

Sea Kayaking Excursions in Sardinia...

Sometimes the best adventures are right on your doorstep. I felt this back when I lived in Wales and I fell it here too! Sardinia is an amazing place to live and I'm very lucky to have such stunning locations to paddle so close to home. The start point for this trip is just ten minutes from home and the trip itself is quite an adventure!

I launch from a place called the Cozza, which translates as Mussels and there is a shallow Bay here where they are harvested. The Cozza is also the place where me and Melissa started and finished our kayak circumvavigation of Sardinia two years ago. Its a special place for us.

The conditions were lovely for early January! It's quite mild in Winter here but not always. As I write this now a few days later it is colder and I can see snow in the mountains. A big change from the 40 degree heat that I have experienced here in Summer!

As the islands come into sight we settle into our thoughts, chatting intermittently during the one hour crossing.

First landfall on Isola di Soffi with a view of mainland Sardinia in the distance.

The Jellyfish were everywhere today and a pleasure to see. They are known as Mauve Stingers Pelagia Noctiluca. Their pretty harmless but do give an uncomfortable sting!

The islands form a chain for Island hopping and from the Northern side of Soffi the view of the islands opens up.

As we approach Isola di Mortorio we take time to look at the wonderful view of the Golfo Aranci in the distance.

Here we can see the furthest point of the trip, Rocce Mortorio, some 5 miles offshore from the mainland using our route though only 2½ miles if we paddled further north.

It's small and split into two rocks and feels like a very special place to me.

This is the view back from Rocce Mortorio to the main Island of Mortorio.

We stopped for a quick beach clean on the Eastern end of Mortorio.

Time for lunch and we stop at Roley Poley Bay, (Our name for it) on the island of Le Camere. We named it this as Milly did her first Eskimo roll here a few years back :)

It's quite a spot!

After a good long rest in the lovely Roley Poley Bay we begin the long paddle back to the mainland with smiles on our faces :)

Sea Kayaking Excursions in Sardinia...

Some journeys in Life are very special and this paddle around the stunning Island of Isola di Tavolara is one such journey! The island dominates the surrounding landscape for miles in all directions. Physically it is 3 miles long, ¾ of a mile wide and 564 metres high. It was once one of the smallest kingdoms in the World and you can still visit the Kings of Tavolara in the cemetery on the Island.

The paddle out from the mainland is always exciting as the view opens up in front of you.

It doesn't take long to reach the island but we take a break and go for a walk as the majority of the island is Military and off limits to the public. We won't be able to land again until we finish circumnavigating the island, which takes about 3 hours.

This is the cemetery where some of the islands Kings now rest.

Back in the kayaks and we start by tackling the northern end of the island first.

We soon reach the northeastern point and an amazing view!

This is Poseidon's arch, tidy da!

Theres a small cave to see before reaching the corner to the southern side of the island.

Then boom! This incredible view greets you. The photo really doesn't do it justice! The furthest point of the island in front of you is 3 miles (5KM) away and the height is 564 mteres high! In places the cliffs reach straight down to the sea floor 14 metres below, no transition, just a vertical plunge! The scale and the beauty really does blow you away.

After what always seems a long time due to the tired arms and empty bellies we reach the western point of the island where we can once again stop for a rest :)

It's a good spot for a cheesy tourist photo too!

Isola di Molara e Molarotto...

I had an amazing solo paddle yesterday with extraordinarily good weather, paddling around the island of Molara and out to the tiny island of Molarotto. I love Sardinia! :)
