Tagging Simons Wales Expedition...

Ive been following Simons progress around Wales with interest as I was itching to get on the water with him a few days & hoping I could get the time off work when he arrived in Pembrokeshire.

If you've not heard of Simon or seen my previous blog post about him then you wont know that he's paddling around Wales to raise money for Velindre cancer care hospital. He doing well with the fundraising too & you can make a donation here :)
Simons seems to be busting some new moves since I saw him last!
Though his map reading aint improved, (sorry Simon) :p
I joined him at Fishguard & he told me to keep the land to the left, this brought us to Strumble Head. Not very lively today at all!
Looking at St Davids Head in the distance.
That can wait till after lunch!
We leave on the turn of the tide heading into very calm sea's.
We ignore the bays & head straight for St Davids Head staying well offshore to catch the current.
Nearly there. we approach the sleeping dragon on glassy sea's.
Arse adjustment, you'll get used to this paddling with Simon! despite the rumours it wasn't me that was responsible for his sore arse ;)
Passing Carn Llidi as we enter the notorious Ramsey Sound.
Errrr, did I say notorious???
An Idyllic view of the Bishops.
We pass the sound without any probs! in fact I think I was weeing in my bottle as I drifted over the well dodgy Horse Rock!
Checking the map here for camping options & the 'is there sand, isn't there sand' debate :)
We settle for Porth Clais.
A snippet of camp life. I'm cooking al fresco as I opt to bivi for the night.
I take a look at the 9 mile crossing for the following day.
As Simon gets his camp sorted.

Day Two & we're off. This'll be Simons biggest crossing to date.
A headwind was picking up as we Approached Martins Haven. Thats Skomer on the right.
Arriving at Martins Haven for a well earned rest!
And catching up on Facebook.
Off we go again & Simons feeling optimistic. I've just told him we're going through the notorious Jack Sound against the tide :D
Though we still find time to play.

Before pulling in for another break at West Dale as the tide doesn't turn in our favour till 17:00 for the crossing to Lynney Head & St Govens.
Thats Skokholm in the distance.

As wee start the crossing from St Ann's head to Lynney Head the sea's start to build up :)
Some decent swell :)
Approaching Lynney Head & it was becoming quite bouncy & fun. I was bloody freezing though as I was wearing shorts & a rash vest :s
The coastline on this stretch of coast is awesome & very dramatic.
We take a short break & Simon thinks we're auditioning for Gladiators???
And his paddle has become a pugil stick!
We battle on into the fading light & its almost full dark by the time we reach Broad Haven South. Its raining too & late so we forget socialising, say our goodnights & descend into our tents.
Day 3. Morning arrives to reveal a canvas of pure beauty & more than one set of bare arse cheeks as the morning skinney dippers arrive!

We decide on an easy day after the milages of the two previous days. We choose to head for Tenby ready for the crossing to the Worms Head on Gower.
I'M ON MY MOBILE!!!!
We stop at Stackpole for food & coffee in the cafe there as well as climb a hill for some phone reception.
Feeling very contented with full bellies & a coffee fix we push on! or are pushed on as the following sea gives us a fast crossing to Manobier & more than a couple of good surfs :)
Time for another break (again), I quite like Simons approach to exped's :)
We stopped at beautiful Shrinkle Haven, not too far from Tenby.

Passing St Margrets Island in the mist.
We meet Sean Hurrel at Tenby just before i'm abandoned :p
Simon wants to book into a B&B???
I choose to camp & it turns out to be a beautiful evening.
And the morning aint too shabby too :)
To be fair Simon did need to recharge his phone batteries but he picked the best night to do it on???
The following day Sean & Paul join us for the day, we choose to paddle to Pendine sands for the night.
Simon meeting some fans ;)
Sean & Paul posing infront of St Catherines Island. Some good leaning by Sean.

Checking out the gap at St Catherines Island. Too shallow today.
Passing the new Tenby Lifeboat station.

And approaching Saundersfoot where we pull in for water supplies & coffee :)

Leaving Saundersfoot I was pleased to see that the coastline was still pretty dramatic & was new Coastline for me as I've only passed here far offshore before. I was having fun :)

We pull into Pendine for a rest & to say our goodbyes to Sean & Paul before looking for a camp spot. As you may well have figured the rest involved more coffee!
Back on the water we chose to camp just a quarter of a mile up the beach but its easier to paddle there than carry so thats what we did.
It was a lovely spot & I got a campfire going in the evening just in time for my bosses arrival as I'll be taking Mikes van back to Fishguard in the morning while he paddles with Simon for a couple of days.
I've really enjoyed paddling with Simon & he's now only a few days from the finish line at Cardiff. Please give a little donation as he certainly has earned it :)

By the way, I left Simon & Mike on Sunday morning & was leading kayakers out of Fishguard a few hours later, dealing with rescues & watching Dolphins leaping out of the water. What an awesome life :D

Camping With Clients :)

Camping & kayaking are two of my favourite things, throw in a couple of clients & wages too then I'm a very happy bunny indeed :)
This trip was done whilst working for Mayberry Kayaking over the bank holiday weekend. I guess not all the tourists was to cram into the holiday hotspots with drunken numpties & screaming kids :D
With a stiff Notrtherly wind forecast I decided to go from Saundersfoot to Barafundle with an overnight camp at Manobier.
This was gonna be fun!
 Leaving Saundersfoot...

 Approaching Tenby, what a view!
Always time for some caves :)

 Tenbys new lifeboat station...
Starting our crossing to Caldey Island :)

Leaving Caldey. Forgot to take piccies on the Island (whoops!).

 Taking a break at Lydstep...
 Camp at Manobier :)

Day two & exploring the coast on route to wonderful Barafundle...

We avoid the main beach at Barafundle & head for a private secluded spot to the side of the beach with caves to explore too. Access by sea only, or so we thought till the tide went out & the tourists arrive!

Two awesome days to contemplate as we paddle the short final stretch back to Stackpole & the finish. What a fab job! :)

Simons Exped Training...

Sorry for the lack of blog posts recently, i've been kept really busy working for Mayberry Kayaking :)

These two days work were a lucky chance for me & a strange coincidence for Simon. Back in 2011 I paddled right around the beautiful Welsh coastine, It was just a crazy dream but i was crazy enough to take it on. This trip it turned out had inspired Simon to do the same & to raise money for a local cancer hospital at the same time.
Simon wanted to get some training in in preporation for the expedition so booked in with Mayberry kayaking. The first booking was skills based I beleive & that was with Mike & the second booking was for some expedition type training with skills pracice too & an overnight camp thrown in. It was supposed to be with Mike but he was running a Skomer trip so Simon ended up with me, the person who inspired his trip, a happy coincidence for both of us as I love camping trips, especially when I get paid for them!

The weather was looking dubious for the trip but as it was expedition training dubious weather seemed a likely part of the training so we cracked on.
The first day was wet & windy but not very big on the sea & we had a good wind mostly on our backs all day. We set off from Whitesands Bay & paddled to Abermawr for our nights camp.
Day two was a little more interesting as we were doing a Pembrokeshire classic (Strumble Head) on a day with a decent wind blowing & some swell running too. We were off reasonably early after breaking through some surf, it wasnt big but Simon managed to find a good set on the way out & got a faceful.
The races approaching Strumble were a little lively which is what I was hoping for as this was part of the skills Simon would need on his journey around Wales. A little observation from me concluded that a good low brace was required so i devised some exercises to practice this once we were past Strumble Head, the southerly wind taking the bite out of its notorious tide races much to Simons releif.
Once in the sheltered water beyond Strumble I had Simon doing lots of edging to initiate a capsize & provide a dynamic low brace opportunity, it was working a treat & Simon was doing great!
We decided to finish the trip in Lower Town Fishguard & finished with more edging/bracing practice, some rolls & a clamber on deck rescue all of which Simon did really well. I think he’s ready!

As I type he’s nearly half way around Wales & not having much luck with the weather but he seems pretty determined so please support him by going to his page & making a donation. Here’s his page link https://www.justgiving.com/LookingOutForLinda/

Simon all ready for the off :)

Camp for the night at Abermawr.
 Nosey Locals!
